$19.97 USD
Make core vocabulary AAC practice a breeze with these task boxes/task cards/rotation activities.
As an special SLP, I know that it can be a challenge to find ways to incorporate daily practice of core vocabulary words into your students' routine.
Task boxes and task cards are a great way to do just that!
This set includes everything you need to get lots of fun repetitive practice the following core vocabulary words: up/down, open/close, same/different, make/it and who.
Up / Down:
Sorting Task Bin- Students will sort scenes by whether they are going 'up' or 'down' based on the contents of the scene. For example, they will put the girl walking up the starts in 'up' and the man cutting a tree down in 'down'.
Car Driving Task Bin- Supply some toy cars and students drive “Up” or “Down” to each pictured destination. 20 roads with destinations included. *You can also use the phrases “Go up” and “Go down”
Open / Close:
Clothespin Choice Task Cards- Students will match clothespins to the corresponding picture. For example, they will match the clothespin with the picture of a wrapped present to 'open it' and "close it" to the picture of an open unattended refrigerator door.
Open / Close Activity Task Bin- For this task bin you’ll need to gather a few things from around your classroom/ office.
We recommend you choose a variety of small, lidded containers.
This is a dual task- first the student will say “open” as they go through and take the lid off of each container, revealing some small item inside (we like to use small birthday bag toys, or other goodies we can find at the dollar store).
Secondly, they will say “close” as they go back through the containers, this time placing the items back inside and the lids back on.
Open It: Unwrapping Presents- In this activity, students will take turns unwrapping and wrapping presents. presents. To “open” the presents, the student will say “Open it” and then proceed to remove the gift wrapping and find out what’s underneath!
Make It:
Make a Face Task Bin- Students use the phrase “make it” as they choose the face, eyes and mouth to complete each picture.
Choice Making Task Cards- Choice Making Task Cards. Have your student look at the two pictures and decide which one they would choose to make.
Same / Different:
Which One Is different?- In this activity, students will look at three pictures and identify which one is different. For example, they may see three pictures of dogs but one dog may be wearing a collar while the other two are not.
Find The Same- The student looks at a card and finds all of the items that are the
“same.”
These task boxes and task cards are a great way to ensure that your students are getting daily practice with their core vocabulary words.
That’s 11 complete core vocabulary tasks- totaling 104 pages of communication practice! They are also great for working with paraprofessionals!

Why Go Core?
When you teach your students CORE vocabulary, you're giving them so much more than just a few words.
You're giving them the words they need to start a conversation, to comment to a friend, or to ask for something they want, or interject into a conversation.
Simply put, you're giving them the words they need to communicate. Instead of teaching your student to say- "Apple...Apple...Apple" by handing them a laminated picture of an apple.
They'll be able to say- "want more" or point and say "there" to indicate where their snack is.
Core words are the words we all use to communicate with each other every day. Give your students the words they need to develop true language skills, don't hold them back to simply requesting items that are in their immediate vicinity. Are you ready for the best part?
Teaching core words are... way easier than picture exchange systems! No more printing/ cutting/ laminating the same set of nouns, only to have them destroyed or lost in a few days. If you're teaching non-verbal students you can use a speech generating device or the low tech version- core boards (we've supplied you with a link if you don't already have one) and you just print and laminate, that's it, everything they need is just on one page, and no more moving pieces to lose, it's amazing! We hope you're ready to switch over, and Go CORE. This packet has everything you need to get started! This packet is HUGE! It provides a plethora of resources to your students engaged and communicating. With CORE language the focus is on getting students to truly develop their language, by understanding the words and how they are used in conversation.Get started with focus word sets.

About the Authors
Meet Shari Bithell, M.Ed, Ed.S, GATE Certified was a 5th/6th grade GATE teacher in a California model school for full inclusion. She worked with mostly GATE and 2e students, challenging them in their areas of strengths and helping them to grow and progress in their areas of challenge. Executive Functioning skills were an area that Shari felt all GATE students needed to develop as a life skill to carry them through higher education and their eventual career. Shari did eventually move on to working at the
district level both as an instructional coach helping teachers to grow in areas of challenge and heading up the GATE program at her district. Although it was not recognized as a child, Shari would probably be labeled as 2e in today’s school climate. She understands the challenges of being gifted, yet struggling in some academic areas. Shari’s special interests include reading, gardening, and playing with her grandchildren.
Meet Jeanine Leech, M.Ed, with over 24 years of working in special education, Jeanine knows what it takes to create the most inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students. She started in the field as an instructional aide for a child with autism and knew immediately that this was her calling. She has served as a teacher, behavior specialist, program specialist, and special education and student services director. Jeanine possesses extensive training in IDEA IEPs (Special Education), Section 504 Plans (Civil Rights), Gifted and Talented Students, Foster Youth, and Student Discipline.
Her expertise as a former district employee and an advocate for families brings a unique skill set that works with families and school districts towards resolutions that are solution-focused with student’s needs at the center.
